Rock Hill is the largest city in York County, South Carolina, and is believed to have received its name when a railroad crew referred to the area as a “rocky hill.” The first settlers in the area began to come in the early 1830s, but the city was not incorporated until the railroad was completed. Rock Hill is also well known for its significant role in the American Civil Rights movement, as it was the site for numerous sit-ins and the first stop for the Freedom Riders in 1961. Today, the city is well-known for its numerous museums that depict the area’s diverse history.
