Family law services we offer in North Carolina

Alienation of Affection

North Carolina is one of the few states that lets you sue a third party who broke up your marriage. Learn if you have a claim and how long you have to file.

Alimony

Whether you need alimony or may be asked to pay it, we explain how NC judges decide amount and length, and how marital misconduct can change the outcome.

Child Custody

Custody cases in NC turn on the child’s best interest. We help parents build a strong plan, get through mandatory mediation and protect time with their kids.

Child Support

How NC child support is calculated, when it can change and how to enforce it. Clear advice for parents on either side of a support order.

Criminal Conversation

Criminal conversation is an NC claim against a spouse’s affair partner. Learn what you must prove, the 3-year deadline and what damages may be possible.

Divorce

NC divorce requires one year of separation. We help you protect property, support and custody claims before the divorce is final.

Mediation

Settle custody, property and support issues outside the courtroom. We represent and prepare clients for NC custody mediation and settlement conferences.

Domestic Violence

Need a protective order in North Carolina, or served with one? We help with emergency 50B orders, hearings, renewals and related custody issues.

Equitable Distribution

How North Carolina divides marital property and debt in a divorce. Protect your share of the house, retirement accounts and business with a clear ED strategy.

Post-Separation Support

Post-separation support is temporary spousal support in NC while alimony is decided. Find out who qualifies, how it’s calculated and how fast you can get it.

Postnuptial Agreements

Already married and want a clear financial plan? We draft and review North Carolina postnuptial agreements that meet the legal rules and hold up later.

Prenuptial Agreements

Protect a business, family property or children from a prior marriage. We draft and review prenups that follow North Carolina’s Premarital Agreement Act.

Separation Agreements

A well-written separation agreement settles property, support and custody without court. We draft and review NC separation agreements that hold up.

Appellate Practice

Unhappy with a custody, alimony or property ruling? NC appeal deadlines are short. We handle family law appeals to the NC Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.

How we approach family law cases

Most family law cases settle, and the best settlements come from careful preparation. We gather the financial records, run the numbers and learn what a judge is likely to do before we negotiate. If your case does need a courtroom, you’ll walk in prepared. Throughout, we keep you informed and give you honest answers about your options.

Two deadlines every North Carolina spouse should know

North Carolina requires one year of separation before an absolute divorce. Before that divorce is granted, you must file or settle any claim for equitable distribution, alimony or post-separation support, or you lose it (N.C.G.S. 50-11). If you’re separated or thinking about it, talk to a lawyer early.
